Competition is a subset of conflict.

“The foremost sociological characteristic of competition is the fact that conflict in it is indirect.”

“parallel efforts by both parties concerning the same prize”

S distinguishes between the subjective goal and objective result of competition. The prize competitors seek is in the hands of neither.

S focuses on competition where the only adversary in is the aim.

“ambitious competition in the field of science aims not only at the adversary but at the common aim, on the assumption that the knowledge gained by the victor also is the gain and advantage of the loser” (Simmel 2010)

“In this second form of competition, then, the subjectivity of the the final goal and the objectivity of the final result interweave in the most fascinating manner. A super-individual, objective or social unit supersedes both parties and their fight. Each party fights its adversary without turning against him, wihtout touching him, so to speak. The subjective, antagonistic mainspring thus leads to the realization of objective values, and victory in the fight is not really the success of the fight itself but, precisely, of the realization of values outside of it” (Simmel 2010)
